Artist Statement - CongruenceFor me, painting is an immersing process. It's a time during which I attempt to let the subconscious come to the fore. Impulse rather than calculated decision is allowed to express itself, without judgment or motive. In this process, a sort of symbiosis occurs; where two cognitive states complement each other and produce art that is a reflection of both realms.
In this body of work, done in the span of one year, no theme or subject matter was intentional. Instead, I just painted. I painted that to which I was attracted at that moment in my life. The result, as I discovered, was a series of paintings that when viewed as a whole reflect a state of congruence. As defined in the dictionary, congruence is a state of agreement. The Latin "congruere" meaning to come together or agree. It became obvious to me that I was attracted to producing works that were "in agreement" on many levels; whether it was through the use of color, composition or subject matter. Making sure that all pieces of the painting where harmonious whether it was grapefruits sitting next to the cherimoya fruits or a donkey and his master in a palm grove. And in turn, each painting seemed to be in agreement with the others even though their topics seem unrelated; it became a collection of work eliciting feelings of harmony, balance and coexistence. So it was no wonder that I turned to nature, the perfect example of that which we find congruent, harmonious and in balance. And so it seems, one of our basic desires, whether conscious or subconscious, is to see that which is congruent, no doubt because, that is what is beautiful. Return to view collection |
